The 3 East nursing unit was honored as a team with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Sarah Bush Lincoln on July 13.

3 East was nominated numerous times for its strong teamwork, friendliness, and compassion while helping patients. Their nomination letters, they read in part:

“I have been in many hospitals during my 65 years of living and have never been treated as nicely as I was when I was in 3 East’s care. Everyone in the unit deserves this award! They made my overnight stay feel as if I were at home. In fact, it was better than being at home. I appreciated the smiling faces throughout the day.”

Another patient wrote: “I can’t pick out just one person that took great care of me while I was in the hospital. So, I will say everyone deserves praise for what they do. Thanks to all on the 3 East nursing staff!”

Another patient remarked: “I was very happy with the entire staff that cared for me. From the Emergency Department to 3 East, all of the staff, even the woman that cleaned my room and those who delivered my meals – were absolutely wonderful! I was so impressed with the friendly attitudes and their teamwork with one another. What a great group of young healthcare staff.”

Sarah Bush Lincoln has joined more than 2,700 healthcare facilities by becoming a DAISY Award hospital partner. The DAISY Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.

Patients, visitors, nurses, physicians and other employees may nominate a deserving nurse for The Daisy Award and a nurse or unit will be selected by SBL’s DAISY committee every month to receive this special honor. Nomination forms are located at www.sarahbush.org and at all SBL clinics and on patient floors. The forms can be submitted to any Sarah Bush Lincoln staff member, or sent via email to [email protected] or mail to Sarah Bush Lincoln, DAISY Nursing Award, 1000 Health Center Drive, Mattoon, IL 61938. For more information, SBL DAISY interim coordinator, Tracey McCord, RN, at (217) 238-4987 or [email protected].
